Like most nouns referring to animal and human subjects, there are two separate words for “cat” depending on its sex. While “die Katze” is indeed, feminine, it technically refers to a female cat. A male cat is “der Kater”.
Many animals have different words depending on sex. For example “der Hund” (the dog) is masculine but a female dog (bitch) is “die Hündin”.
